Matt Lowton scored a very rare 9/10 on the Deadbat-o-meter in the 4-0 win against Yeovil Town.
Lowton 9/10 – Excellent. Looked a class act. He did not have an opponent really, as Yeovil played with a midfield tucked in, and he took advantage superbly by bombing forward at every opportunity. Some of his pieces of close control, his quick feet and driven, low crosses were better than anything else in the match.
Francois 8/10 – Very good. He defended with authority, ensuring he got to every ball first and won everything. Showed real determination and made sure he imposed himself on his opponent and in every challenge. Needs to maintain this standard.
Maguire 8/10 – Excellent again. He won every header and clearance, read the game well and defended with intelligence and maturity for one so young. He has really improved in recent weeks and has been very consistent.
Collins 7/10 – Has the lowest mark of the defenders but only because the others were very good; seven is no slight on his performance. Another very consistent performance.
Doyle 8/10 – Started slowly as we took a while to control the midfield but gradually started to get his foot in. Had got into the box and had a few half chances before his goal, which was surprising. He continued to break up play, pass the ball better than many ever expected from last season’s performances and generally did his job well.
McDonald 8/10 – Showed a real range of passing again and, given plenty of time, showed how he could move the ball well. He was very good in the first half and looked the most creative player on the pitch. He was not quite as effective in the second half but the game was won and he still worked hard.
Quinn 8/10 – Showed what he can do after some poor recent performances. Made three goals and showed some lovely touches; just needs to do this more in games and in a run of games.
Williamson 7/10 – Daft as it sounds, he was one of the poorer players despite scoring twice. His first goal was a superb strike and, though the second was a bit fortunate, he had got into good space to receive the pass. He showed some nice touches and combined very well with others. He is another, like Quinn, who is a class above at this level when he is in the right frame of mind but is still not consistent enough.
Evans 6/10 – His least effective game for months, though he certainly was not awful. He was not in the game as much as usual, but was marked very closely.
Cresswell 7/10 – Worked hard and had a very decent first half in which he scored a very good header. He worked hard, closing defenders down and was always chasing loose balls even if things did not always come off. Faded somewhat in the second half but the game was pretty much over.
Substitutes
Porter – Unconvincing. He had a few half-chances and blazed one over right at the death.
Beattie – Seems to be trying too hard at times. Like Porter, he struggled to get into the game, as United were content (rightly) to keep a solid shape and only attack if Yeovil made mistakes.
Montgomery – Came on right at the end and hardly touched the ball.
